Barney Rosset Estate in East Hampton Sells for $5.5 Million

An East Hampton property once owned by Barney Rosset, who published works by Henry Miller and Samuel Beckett that were considered scandalous, was on the market for $6.495 million and just sold to a Hollywood actor who asked to remain anonymous for $5.5 million.

A memoir, titled “Rosset: My Life in Publishing and How I Fought Censorship,” was published last summer by OR Books. Rosset was known as a crusader against censorship in the 1960s, publishing controversial books including D.H. Lawrence’s “Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” Henry Miller’s “Tropic of Cancer” and “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” through his company, Grove Street Press.

Rosset, who died in 2012 at age 89, lived on the 13.5-acre property for about 10 years until 1993, when he sold it to the current owner, says listing agent Bill Stoecker of Town & Country Real Estate. Over seven years, the current owner salvaged and renovated a barn on the property, which is now the double-height living room for the four-bedroom home, Stoecker says. He added another 4,000 square feet of living space to the shingle-style home, which has four fireplaces, a wine cellar, and a rooftop hot tub. The property, which sits adjacent to 10 acres of town-owned reserve land, has a swimming pool, pool house, tennis court and separate garage, and is surrounded by gardens.

Town & Country Real Estate Annual Mid-Summer Cocktail Party

Tuesday, July 26th, 2016

There’s almost nothing better than a breezy summer night in the Hamptons sipping rose under a rose-colored sky by the waterside watching the yachts and sailboats go by.  It does however get better when you are enjoying said rose at East Hampton Point surrounded by friends and colleagues at Town & Country Real Estate’s annual mid-summer cocktail party. That was the scene on July 14th when over 100 agents, brokers, family, and friends from the Hamptons and North Fork offices gathered to enjoy the good life for a few hours.

CEO and President Judi Desiderio was thrilled to see so many agents and brokers from all seven offices at the party.  “What a great night! I love to see everyone relaxing and enjoying each other’s company.  At T&C, we’re all about our people!” said Judi.

And what do real estate pros talk about at a cocktail party?  Real estate of course.  There must be something in the water because all around the party agents and brokers were excitedly chatting about all of the deals in the works.  From sales and last-minute summer rentals to long term commercial leases the East End real estate business is looking good for Town & Country Real Estate.

"Mother Nature blessed T&C with a beautiful sunset over the harbor," said Judi.  "Great people, great setting, great party, and spectacular sunset.  What more could you ask for?"

"Town & Country's grand opening of our new East Hampton office was a grand success…a good time was had by all," says Judi Desiderio, Town & Country Real Estate founder and CEO.  East Hampton office manager and veteran real estate agent Gene Stilwell wholeheartedly agreed adding, "The champagne was flowing and all had a good time! How nice to share a little time with friends and colleagues toasting our new digs."

The new office, located at 46 Main Street, East Hampton, a few doors up for the former space has high ceilings, a wide expanse of windows showcasing the most spectacular examples of Hamptons real estate, cozy gas fireplace, and plenty of room for all of our East Hampton agents.  The chic aesthetic is accented by design elements including a chrome and wood light fixture in the formal lobby that perfectly matches the hardwood floor.

The grand opening celebration was held Friday, May 6, 2016, to kick off the summer season and over 100 well-wishers came out to raise a glass of Sparkling Point champagne – imported from the North Fork hamlet of Southold, and nibble tasty bites from Cavaniola's Gourmet Cheese Shop in Sag Harbor.  Town & Country Real Estate's founder and CEO Judi Desiderio, managing partners Nancy McGann and Janet Hummel, and the agents in the East Hampton office including William Stoecker, Rick Slater, Kim Slater, Richard Swift, and Hal Zwick, to name a few were in the mix.

"Thanks to all who attended," says Gene. "What a fun night!"
